International mountaineer inspires
Local Resident and record-breaking mountaineering Jake Meyer recently gave an inspiring talk at the Hub. In 2005, at the age of 21, Jake became the youngest Briton to climb Everest and the youngest man in the world to complete the 7 Summits Challenge, which involves reaching the summit of the highest mountain on each continent.
Jake’s talk, illustrated with dazzling photos, focused on his ascent of K2, the second highest mountain in the world and a significantly more challenging and dangerous climb than Everest. Thwarted twice by weather and logistics, it took him 10 years and a third attempt to get to the top of the 'Savage Mountain'. As he stressed, however, the most important aspect of every expedition is ensuring he returns safely.
Daughters Ottilie and Poppy acted as excellent assistants at the talk and modelled specialised climbing gear. Jake paid tribute to his wife Saskia and three daughters for putting up with his sporadic absences. This is particularly apt as his next challenge is an expedition, commencing on Easter Day, to Nepal to climb the peaks of Kanchenjunga, Everest and Lhotse in 2 months.
We’re looking forward to hosting Jake on his return for a talk on this expedition, including a special event for children.
